Magazines and Books

Kalen Delaney is THE expert on SQL Server.  Her "Inside SQL" series gives great information on the internals of SQL Server, the "why it does this" stuff. These books are invaluable to DBAs and developers. She, along with many other SQL Server experts and MVPs, can be found at Soild Quality Learning.

Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000    Inside Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 with CD-ROM

Here's the review I wrote for bn.com on Inside SQL Server 2000:
An absolute 'must buy' for the serious DBA!
This book is INVALUABLE as a troubleshooting reference, as well as in the proper physical design of a database. The concepts in this book give the reader a solid foundation for understanding how and why internal things work the way they do. Once you understand the internals, you can follow up with other books on the bells and whistles that exist outside of the internal engines. This is a book for people who want to understand 'why' things work they way they do, so the book doesn't clutter things up with teaching newbies 'how' to do things. For some reason there seems to be an expectation that the book should cover XML, but there are a couple of reasons why that is not reasonable. First of all, XML is not really 'inside' SQL Server 2000. Only very base level XML functionality was present at the time the product and the book were released. XML functionality has since been added in separate SQLXML releases (not in the SQL Server service packs). Since XML is not part of the internals AND it was not available at the time the book went to press, there is no reason to expect XML to be included in this book. If future versions of SQL Server truly include XML in the internals, and include them at release time, then the expection can reasonably change. If you want to know about XML, then there are books available to tell you all about it :-) All in all, this book is a must-have for anyone working as a SQL Server DBA!

Ken Henderson has some great "Guru's Guide" books on TSQL, XML, and architecture. While Kalen concentrates on the "why", Ken tells us about the "how".
