Ender is a child prodigy, but this is not a book written at a child's level. Card treats the characters with the respect they deserve as he takes us through the gut-wrenching adjustments of learning to kill juxtaposed with the trials of "fitting in" with the others in your environment. This series deserves its status as one of the all-time classics. Ender's Game (Ender #1) Sara Douglass I ran across The
Wayfarer Redemption and thought it was a great book with very good
character development. Then I found out that while Sara Douglass has many books
published in Australia, they are only now beginning to trickle in to the U.S.
and I have to wait before I can read the rest! Visit Sara's website to learn more about her life and her books. Esther FriesnerChicks in Chainmail ?!? Must be some male vision of female submission. No! It's a hilarious collection of short stories about women standing up for themselves and others. So you think Friesner writes nothing but comedy? Wrong again! In The Psalms of Herod and its sequel The Sword of Mary, Vol. 2 Friesner takes a very serious look at gender roles and religion. However, both books are now out of print :-( Mary Gentle"The Books of Ash" is a gritty series of four books that depicts the full horrors of primitive warfare. Through it all Ash not only succeeds but excels as a military commander in the male-dominated world created by Mary Gentle. The series has some interesting twists and is not for those with a weak stomach, but is definitely well worth the read. You may wonder at first why some of the "modern" details are in there, but hang in and you'll find out. Tepper is my all-time favorite author. Her books are at once entertaining and thought provoking. She plays around with gender roles and religious rituals in a way that makes you really think about the way they work in real life. Of all her books, Beauty andPseudonyms: E E Horlak, B J Oliphant, A J Orde, Sheri S. Eberhart Reviews, biographies, etc.: Michelle WestThe "Sacred Hunt" series (Hunter's Oath and Hunter's Death) is a well thought out saga with strong women characters. The "Sun Sword" series (The Broken Crown, The Uncrowned King, The Shining Court, and Sea of Sorrows) takes place in the same world with some overlap of characters, but it stands alone as its own series. All the books are engrossing and will have you rushing out to buy the next in the series. Resources SF Site Reviews WeberWoman's Bookshop Reviews Barnes and Noble: Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror
